Sheridan has an outstanding community college, Sheridan College, offering a wide variety of liberal arts and technical/vocational programs. While visiting our area, enjoy a “walking tour”–walking, jogging, or rollerblading–on the scenic concrete walking paths throughout the city of Sheridan. The wildlife and flora are plentiful and beautiful on the walking paths (as well as for hiking in the Bighorn National Forest and Big Horn Mountains). Polo matches and tournaments, carried on from the British heritage of the Sheridan area, fields team from the Big Horn Polo Club (the oldest polo club west of the Mississippi). Matches are held at the Big Horn Equestrian Center on Sunday afternoons throughout the summer, beginning in mid-May. Come to picnic, enjoy the beauty of the outdoors, stomp out divots, and watch the action of talented athletes and animals from around the country – both horse and rider making the fast-paced game entertaining from start to finish. Each week’s schedule varies, often beginning at 11 a.m., and free of charge except for some tournaments and special events. Our Sheridan County Airport is serviced by commercial and private airlines. The runway lengths at the airport are 8,300 ft. and 5,039 ft., with both runways being paved and lighted. Each of our two open-pit coal mines, just over the Montana border in Decker MT, provide summer tours of its coal mine operations. The Whitney Benefits community ice rink is located at the corner of East Brundage Street and North Sheridan Avenue, just a few blocks from downtown Sheridan. The NHL-regulation ice rink provides a safe, clean, educational, customer- and community-oriented skating experience and is designed to appeal to people of all ages and interests. Nestled in the arms of the Big Horn Mountains lies Wyoming’s Golf Capital – four courses all within a 35-mile radius of the city of Sheridan. The WYO Theater www.wyotheater.com (formerly the Lotus Theater), located in our Historic Main Street District, has hosted such artists and musicians as Garth Brooks, Anthony Zirby and John Amos. Dinosaur digs in the Sheridan area are available in the summer, for ages 12 and up, through paleontologist Michael Flynn. Sheridan was founded by John Loucks and incorporated in 1884. Mr. Loucks named the town after one of his Civil War officers, General Sheridan. Check out Historic Tours. The East Entrance to Yellowstone National Park is 204 miles west of Sheridan via US Hwy 14 and 203 miles west via US Hwy 14A, over the Big Horn Mountains. Either way takes approximately 4-4½ hours of travel time, depending on traffic and road conditions, with both routes providing Scenic By-ways offerings of mountain views, varied wildlife, and photo opportunities. If you’ll be traveling in a large motor home or pulling a large trailer, Hwy 14A is less desirable due to its steep grades. Arrow/Blackhills Stage Lines, 307-674-6188, for bus service to and from Billings, MT with a stop in Hardin, MT and Denver, CO with stops in Buffalo, Casper, Douglas, Wheatland, & Cheyenne, WY and Greeley, Fort Collins, and Longmont, CO There currently is no bus service for travel within the city of Sheridan. However, see the Trolley information below for an entertaining and educational alternative.

The Story Fish Hatchery, approximately 20 miles south of Sheridan, is a fun place for the whole family to visit. The fish hatchery site also includes picnic areas, with small shops and eateries nearby, and the atmosphere of a small wooded community at the foot of the Big Horn Mountains. The Sheridan Trolley, which operates from approximately Memorial Day to Labor Day, tours a complete loop of many of Sheridan’s star attractions every hour. It’s a great way to get your first introduction to historic Sheridan, with continuous historic narrative on all rides, for only $2 daily. Riders can disembark or re-enter the trolley at any of the stops, easily making the trolley tour a full day of activity in itself. In the evenings, the trolley also provides transportation between many of the local hotels/motels and the Historic Downtown area. Stop by the Wyoming Information Center (Exit 23 off I-90) or call the Information Center at 307-672-2485 or 800-453-3650 for a current map and schedule.

Scenic By-ways offer two gorgeous options to cross the Big Horn Mountains. US Hwy 14 and US Hwy 14A, just north of Sheridan, are designated as Scenic By-ways, meandering through the Big Horn Mountains to Cody and Yellowstone. Vehicle turnouts allow travelers to relax, watch abundant wildlife, and enjoy world-class views. Hwy 14 beckons one into beautiful Shell Canyon with a must-stop at cascading Shell Falls and the self-guided nature pathways (Interpretive Center seasonal hours: 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., 7 days a week, 307-272-0819). Hwy 14A, accessible from May through October, provides incredible views enlivened by moose in the wild and is also the route to the sacred Indian site, Medicine Wheel.

The Sheridan area offers three spectacular fireworks displays as part of its 4th of July celebrations– at the Equestrian Center near Big Horn, 10 miles south of Sheridan; at the Ucross Foundation, 29 miles east of Sheridan; and in Ranchester, 17 miles northwest of Sheridan. Bird watching is one of the fastest growing types of outdoor recreation nationally, and with our wide-open spaces, accessibility to public lands, and species-rich habitats Wyoming is a natural birding destination. Enjoy a wide range of birds, from bald eagles to pheasants, grouse, geese, and more! The Big Horns also provide nearly 50 miles of ungroomed trails, countless miles of cross-country exploring, and exciting off-trail opportunities within nearly one million acres of national forest. Deep snows, spectacular scenery, and the vastness of the West are why people like to ride here. Snowshoers and cross-country skiers can explore a multitude of flawless trails that grace the backcountry of the Sheridan area terrain, especially in the Bighorn National Forest and the Big Horn Mountains. The Sibley Lake ski area has approximately 15 miles of groomed trails offering a variety of loops and tours for skiers of all skill levels. Trails are well marked and include directional maps at intersections. An added benefit for skiers is a warming hut nestled in the forest where a warm, relaxing break can be enjoyed. If you want to take your dog along, this is allowable on Cutler Ski Trails, 3 miles of packed trails that average from 8,100 to 8,600 feet in elevation. The nearest downhill skiing venue is the Big Horn Ski Resort in the Big Horn Mountains close to Ten Sleep, Wyoming (approximately 3 hours from Sheridan, via Buffalo, WY and US Hwy 16).
