Michael Brohman: The Land in Which We Live

October 1 @ 10:00 am - October 15 @ 7:00 pm

| Free
Screen-Shot-2016-12-10-at-12.00.21-AM

The body of work in this exhibition is a contemporary three-dimensional exploration of that question. These new landscapes are transposed from the traditional two-dimensional portrayal of the land back into the physical realm. The objects and materials can be tangibly engaged and experienced. They are representations of both cultural and natural terrains and at times their intersections. For a contemporary artist, a landscape is often representative of change. Our relationship to the land is not static but is in a state of constant transformation. It is reinterpreted and reimagined as change occurs. This work puts into question what to hold onto and what to release to these forces. It also confronts ownership and values as new influences come into play on one’s life. It is an investigation into who we are at this time and place in our history and how we view our surroundings. Physical location, the history of place, a perspective or states of being are all referenced in the work. Each piece possesses a cultural memory and contemporary awareness of our relationship to the land. Our current connection to the land is extended, condensed, distorted and interpreted.
