WHAT ARE “BUFFALO BILL DAYS”?

The Historic Sheridan Inn is where Buffalo Bill auditioned acts for his Wild West Show. The Inn’s annual ‘BUFFALO BILL DAYS WILD WEST SHOW,” a rollicking western extravaganza, held in June each year, features an authentic wild west show, a historically accurate kick-off parade and the Buffalo Bill Polo Cup. There are numerous fables behind and beneath this “House of 69 Gables,” as labeled by “Ripley’s Believe It or Not!” The Inn was once considered the finest hotel between Chicago and San Francisco and served such notables as Teddy Roosevelt, Will Rogers and Ernest Hemingway. On the National Register of Historic Places, its finery includes the Buffalo Bill Bar imported from England. Scandals and mysteries abound including tales of murder, suicide and infidelity. Witnesses testify that the building hosts a number of ghosts, including a maid, Miss Kate, who lived and worked at the Inn for 65 years. Tour the halls where presidents once stayed in the Victorian splendor at this grand old inn.

The Sheridan Trolley www.downtownsheridan.org/trolley3.shtml , which operates from approximately Memorial Day to Labor Day, tours a complete loop of many of Sheridan's star attractions every hour. It’s a great way to get your first introduction to historic Sheridan, with continuous historic narrative on all rides, for only $1 daily. Riders can disembark or re-enter the trolley at any of the stops, easily making the trolley tour a full day of activity in itself. In the evenings, the trolley also provides transportation between many of the local hotels/motels and the Historic Downtown area. ARE THERE REALLY POLO GAMES IN THE SHERIDAN AREA?

Polo matches and tournaments, carried on from the British heritage of the Sheridan area, fields team from the Big Horn Polo Club (the oldest polo club west of the Mississippi). Matches are held at the Big Horn Equestrian Center on Sunday afternoons throughout the summer, beginning in mid-May. Come to picnic, enjoy the beauty of the outdoors, stomp out divots, and watch the action of talented athletes and animals from around the country – both horse and rider making the fast-paced game entertaining from start to finish. WHAT ARE THE MOST SCENIC DRIVES IN THE AREA?

Scenic By-ways offer two gorgeous options to cross the Big Horn Mountains. US Hwy 14 and US Hwy 14A, just north of Sheridan, are designated as Scenic By-ways, meandering through the Big Horn Mountains to Cody and Yellowstone. Vehicle turnouts allow travelers to relax, watch abundant wildlife, and enjoy world-class views. Hwy 14 beckons one into beautiful Shell Canyon with a must-stop at cascading Shell Falls and the self-guided nature pathways (Interpretive Center seasonal hours: 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., 7 days a week, 307-272-0819). Hwy 14A, accessible from May through October, provides incredible views enlivened by moose in the wild and is also the route to the sacred Indian site, Medicine Wheel.

IS THERE A FISH HATCHERY IN THE AREA?

The Story Fish Hatchery, approximately 20 miles south of Sheridan, is a fun place for the whole family to visit. The fish hatchery site also includes picnic areas, with small shops and eateries nearby, and the atmosphere of a small wooded community at the foot of the Big Horn Mountains. WHAT’S AVAILABLE FOR WINTER SPORTS?

Ride the range by snowmobile on more than 218 miles of top-ten rated trails in the Big Horn Mountain Trail System. Snow lasts until June, and riding into May is not unusual here. Springtime provides excellent snow conditions with fresh powder, deep snow, and warm days. The nearest trailhead is located just 15 miles south of Sheridan, with 100% "real" dry powdery snow. The Big Horns also provide nearly 50 miles of ungroomed trails, countless miles of cross-country exploring, and exciting off-trail opportunities within nearly one million acres of national forest.
Deep snows, spectacular scenery, and the vastness of the West are why people like to ride here. For information on snow depth reports (updated mid-week), snowmobile maps and resources, click here, and ensuing snowmobile links, or directly at wyotrails.state.wy.us where you can order a snowmobile trails map and purchase the $25 permit. If you don’t have your own snowmobile, you can rent one (and even get a guide) at Bear Lodge (in the mountains), 307-655-2444 or 307-752-6444.
Snowshoers and cross-country skiers can explore a multitude of flawless trails that grace the backcountry of the Sheridan area terrain, especially in the Bighorn National Forest and the Big Horn Mountains. The Sibley Lake ski area has approximately 15 miles of groomed trails offering a variety of loops and tours for skiers of all skill levels. Trails are well marked and include directional maps at intersections. An added benefit for skiers is a warming hut nestled in the forest where a warm, relaxing break can be enjoyed. If you want to take your dog along, this is allowable on Cutler Ski Trails, 3 miles of packed trails that average from 8,100 to 8,600 feet in elevation.
The nearest downhill skiing venue is the Big Horn Ski Resort in the Big Horn Mountains close to Ten Sleep, Wyoming (approximately 3 hours from Sheridan, via Buffalo, WY and US Hwy 16). Call 307-366-2600 for more information.
DOES SHERIDAN HAVE AN ICE SKATING RINK?

The East Entrance to Yellowstone National Park is 204 miles west of Sheridan via US Hwy 14 and 203 miles west via US Hwy 14A, over the Big Horn Mountains. Either way takes approximately 4-4½ hours of travel time, depending on traffic and road conditions, with both routes providing Scenic By-ways offerings of mountain views, varied wildlife, and photo opportunities. If you’ll be traveling in a large motor home or pulling a large trailer, Hwy 14A is less desirable due to its steep grades.
