BEAUTY AND ACTIVITIES ABOUND ON HISTORIC MAINSTREET DISTRICT

Historic Downtown Sheridan

Historic Downtown Sheridan is a great place to be this summer. Bob Bozel, editor of True West magazine, cited the Historic Downtown as a major force in the magazine’s decision to name Sheridan the Number One Western Town in America for 2006. The blocks of historic buildings are filled with unique shopping, dining, and entertainment options for the visitors and locals alike. King’s Saddlery & Museum, the town’s movie theater, two unique parks, the library and the YMCA are all located in the downtown area. The Main Street streetscape project in 2003 enhanced the area with comfortable sidewalk benches, street trees, dozens of hanging flower planters creates such an enticing, pedestrian-friendly place, that the True West staff cited in the award:

"Walking the streets of town is to discover and explore the West. The culture is Western, in all of its varieties and meanings. The pace of life is Western. When you’re in Sheridan, no matter where you hail from, you are Western. It’s that magic which really makes the town stand out."

Art galleries, restaurants, authentic western wear stores and many other shopping opportunities invite the visitors and locals alike to spend time enjoying the atmosphere. The district now has virtually a zero vacancy in building occupancy. Many events take place in the Historic Downtown through out the year. The Chamber of Commerce and the Downtown Sheridan Association (DSA) team up for Crazy Days, Farmer’s Markets, Christmas Stroll, and other events where streets are closed, and hundreds of people come to enjoy the festivities. Other groups sponsor car shows, hoop shoot contests, and youth activities throughout the summer. The Sheridan WYO Rodeo draws thousands of visitors every summer during the third week of July. The pancake breakfast, bed races and Rodeo parade have never been better! Street dances provide entertainment downtown after rodeo performances are complete. Two relatively new events, Celebrate the Arts and Buffalo Bill Days are both celebrated in June. Historic Downtown Sheridan is very much the place to be!
