And as you know, in 2006 Sheridan was first ever to be selected as the #1 Western Town in America! Again for consecutive years, Wyoming is the only state with two towns to be featured! Penny L. Becker, Executive Director There are thousands of towns in the American West that celebrate their heritage and culture, but Sheridan, WY, is among the elite. For its efforts, Sheridan is recognized by True West magazine as the #6 True Western Town in the January/February 2007 issue, on newsstands December 12, 2006. True West editors determined the winners based on a number of criteria—especially how each town has preserved its history through older buildings and districts, museums and other institutions, and events. The Top Ten also take the lead in promoting their historic resources to visitors. 
The citation states that, “Don’t let this ranking fool you—Sheridan, which was the top pick in our 2006 Best Western Towns listing—is still a numero uno place to us. In fact, the folks from Sheridan decided that somebody else should have the honor and benefit of being True West’s Top Town in 2007.”
“Sheridan continues to do an incredible job of honoring and preserving its heritage,” says True West Executive Editor Bob Boze Bell. “This past year, the town and the Crow Indian tribe held an important joint celebration of local history and culture. And work continues on the famous Sheridan Inn, where Buffalo Bill auditioned acts for his Wild West show. Sheridan richly deserves recognition for its accomplishments.” 
The True Western Towns feature, now in its second year, also includes a list of Towns to Watch for their good works in historic preservation, and a list of several legendary Old West locales that folks should know. The Top Town of 2007 is Helper, Utah.
