The tourism game, that is, as we head into a promising summer tourism season . . . .

With all the great promotions in place for our successful season, we are excited with each feature of our seasonal events, activities, historic sites, and attractions! Kicking off work with our oldest and biggest annual tourism event, the Sheridan WYO Rodeo (as if I had to tell you), has an enhanced presence with their NEW display at the Information Center on East 5th Street! This means the nearly 100,000 visitors coming though the Center annually have yet one more reason to stay in Sheridan longer, or to come back on their return trip.

In our highest May visitation since 2007, our Center’s team served nearly 10,000 visitors! And for this very purpose, we continue to enhance our customer services and displays to showcase each.

We also now have a NEW B&B within the city limits – the Residence Hill B&B! For overnight travelers, this lovely, historic lodging property, adds to our unique and varied options – quaint local inns and cottages, chain hotels, mountain lodges and authentic ranches. We anxiously await future progress for the Sheridan Inn’s NEW Buffalo Bill character suites.

Sheridan Travel and Tourism’s (STT) work with the Wyoming Film Office and Rosie Berger showcased Sheridan to major film company scouts seeking NEW set locations again this past week. The Los Angeles scouts, with cameras in hand, explored Eatons’ Ranch, Kendrick Mansion, our polo facilities, and mountains. And following our French TV programming two years ago, Director Girard called recently to continue promotions of Sheridan and our western culture!

Speaking of filming, we are blessed with Craig Johnson’s brand NEW “Longmire” episodes weekly debut on A&E, and in the Wall Street Journal, and on billboards across the East Coast! For years he has taken Wyoming and Sheridan to a whole new level with his books’ features of the fictitious Absaroka County (a lot like Sheridan County), and now his ten TV episodes! I thoroughly enjoyed the first two, and you will want to tune in with me at 8 PM for Sunday’s third episode.

Surrounded by these positive energies and projects, STT continues to enhance our outreach to over 19 million through our aggressive marketing endeavors – coordinating all with our NEW ‘Blaze Trails’ theme. Our EXCITING, and NEW $300,000 advertising campaign covers broadcasting, web, electronic, print and billboards – all driving perspective visitors to our website, via multiple QR codes over the last few years, and then naturally to the Sheridan area!

STT’s marketing, revealed in the 3-state, 15-billboard campaign, draws those traveling the ‘rubber-tire market’ between Yellowstone National Park and the Black Hills – with Sheridan’s convenient location midway between these two national icons.

In the last 2 weeks we have distributed 73,000 brochures regionally! The NEW ‘Blaze Trails’ brochures and postcards also showcase our area offerings and are available to you and your guests, compliments of STT. Just call us for your supply at 307-673-7120.

Although the ‘project’ is not so new, NEW efforts are certainly on an exciting cutting edge of opportunities to improve our air service. We all know how key this is to our area’s economics and health! And with this week’s assistance and direction from heavy hitters in the Wyoming Aeronautics Division and Senator Hank Coe’s interactions, a core group of the area’s concerned and involved citizens, organizations and businesses is growing. With Sheridan’s current 70% leakage to the Billings airport, it is crucial we unite commitment to enhanced air service with a serious commitment and plan of action for the future of our tourism and business travelers – focusing on price, schedule and reliability!

Sheridan can be proud of our cohesive teams and team-building skills! I know my small team of seven STT Board of Commissioners makes me proud as they work year-round, year after year and they deserve kudos for their proactive dedication to tourism, economics and Sheridan! Thanks Steve Jacobson, Sharie Prout, Ryan Franklin, Dave Youngren, Gary Small, Ryan Mulholland and Rich Bridger!

You’ll be in for a treat as the 82nd Annual Sheridan WYO Rodeo, a member of the Million Dollar Tour of Professional Rodeos, is one of the best professional rodeos in the country.

Each of four nightly, Wednesday through Saturday, performances starts off with the traditional roar of the cannon signaling the start of the show!

The Championship Indian Relay Races are the very first event and an event you will not see anywhere else. You’ll be left breathless with excitement – and that’s only the beginning.

Bareback bronc riding, saddle bronc riding, team roping, tie down roping, bull riding, single steer roping and women’s barrel racing follow, each exciting in their own regard. You will watch the very best of the professional rodeo contestants compete at the WYO Rodeo on world championship quality stock provided by Sankey Pro Rodeo.

In addition to the evening performances, slack performances are held every morning from Tuesday through Saturday in order to give all of the 500+ competitors a chance to compete in their respective events. Admission to slack performances is free.

Wednesday is when the WYO carnival opens for business. It’s a large carnival and features the best rides and all the carnival delicacies like cotton candy and funnel cakes. The carnival is open each night of the rodeo performances and is located next to the rodeo arena at the Sheridan County Fairgrounds. Wednesday is also designated as Kid’s Night at the rodeo. Admission is reduced for Kid’s 12 years old and younger!

If you’re a golfer, the 6th Annual Chris LeDoux Memorial Golf Tournament will be held on July 6th and 7th at the Top 100-ranked Powder Horn Golf Course. This two-day tournament is open to the public, with a limited number of teams, and includes a practice round, BBQ, auction and live entertainment Friday.

The events surrounding rodeo week are plentiful! The Boot Kick Off on Saturday, July 7th is a favorite. Visitors literally “kick off” the festivities by actually kicking off a boot in a contest designed to see who can fling their boot the furthest. (Hint: Wear a loose boot!) Winners get braggin’ rights and prizes. It’s a family affair with lots of vendors and good music for your dancing and listening enjoyment. The celebration will be held on the Sheridan College campus and is free and open to the public.

Sheridan, Wyoming was recently honored as the #1 Small Town for Cowboy Charm by Western Horseman Magazine. This historic town was plotted in the early 1880s and remains an authentic cowboy destination.

Sheridan has always been proud of its western traditions and frontier heritage. In recent years, the town has received a number of honors and distinctions highlighting its work in historic preservation, small-town hospitality, and adventurous offerings. In 2011, Sheridan was named a Distinctive Destination by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, a Top Place to Live in the West by American Cowboy, and a Top Town for Sportsmen by Outdoor Life.

“History and cowboy collide in this northern Wyoming town where rough riders and legendary craftsmen share the main street with modern-day cuisine and historic saloons” writes Western Horseman staff. “The West’s best cowboy destinations often are not along the Interstate or near a major airport . . .” Sheridan is one of “10 small towns that continue to honor their horse, cattle and cowboy heritage.”

Hidden away in the Big Horn Mountains, Sheridan shares her modern and historic charms with visitors. A central destination in Sheridan, the Historic Main Street District, displays 46 buildings on the National Register of Historic Places. The Mint Bar remains a favorite cowboy watering hole, and the King’s Museum draws attention for its namesake, internationally-recognized leather craftsman and saddle maker Don King. Sheridan’s most famous cowboy resident, Buffalo Bill, once co-owned the Sheridan Inn and held auditions for his traveling show. Just outside of town, forts and battle sites display the challenges of early frontier life. Reenactments and interpretive centers explain how cowboys fought and survived when the west was still being tamed.

While history is preserved in Sheridan, the new west can be seen here as well. Modern parks, downtown sculptures, summer street festivals and concerts, and championship golf courses are just a few new west additions. In recent years, hang gliding and snowmobiling have joined hunting and fishing as favorite outdoor pursuits in the area. In its 82nd year, the Sheridan WYO Rodeo is a perfect example of classic cowboy traditions combining with creative new events like bed races and the boot kick-off.

Western Horseman Magazine was established in 1936 and is one of the oldest horse publications in the world.

Your travels this summer should include a visit to beautiful Sheridan, Wyoming during WYO Rodeo week from Friday, July 8th to Sunday, July 17th. You’re in for a treat for as the WYO Rodeo brochure truthfully states, “From the first boot kicked off, ‘til the last tailgate shuts, the most fun you’ll have anywhere.”

So, why will you have fun? The first reason is, of course, because the 81st Annual WYO Rodeo, a member of the Million Dollar Tour of Professional Rodeos, is one of the best professional rodeos in the country. Each of four nightly performances starts off with a bang and the World Champion Indian Relay Races which you can’t see anywhere else. You’ll be left breathless with excitement. And that’s only the beginning. Many other events follow, including bareback and saddle bronc riding, team roping, tie down roping, bull riding, single steer roping and women’s barrel racing. They’re all exciting because the very best of the professional rodeo contestants come and compete at the WYO Rodeo on world championship stock provided by Sankey Pro Rodeo.

In addition to traditional rodeo events, there will be a plethora of activities for all-ages. Rodeo week starts with the Chris LeDoux Memorial Golf Tournament and Boot Kick-off and ends with a huge tailgating party and polo game. In between are the Sneaker and Spurs Rodeo Run, Beds along the Big Horns Race, a carnival, parade and much more.

Wednesday is a big day for the kids, because that’s when the WYO carnival opens for business. It’s a big carnival and features all the best rides and all the usual kinds of carnival delicacies like cotton candy and funnel cakes. The carnival is open each night of the rodeo performances and is located next to the rodeo arena at the Sheridan County Fairgrounds.

If you’re a golfer, the 5th Annual Chris LeDoux Memorial Golf Tournament will be held on July 8th and 9th at the Top 100 ranked Powder Horn Golf Course. This two-day tournament is open to the public, with a limited number of teams, and includes a practice round, BBQ auction and live entertainment Friday.
When you’re not attending the rodeo there are plenty of other things to do. The Boot Kick Off on Saturday, June 9th is a favorite. Visitors literally “kick off” the festivities by really kicking off a boot in a contest designed to see who can fling their boot the furthest. (Hint: Wear a loose boot!) Winners get braggin’ rights and prizes. It’s a family affair with a chili cook off contest, lots of vendors and good music. This year, for the first time, the celebration will be held on the Sheridan College campus which promises to be an exciting venue, and is free and open to the public.

Friday, July 15th is the peak day of Rodeo Week. If you take advantage of it all you’re going to get up early and get home late. At 6 a.m. the Local Kiwanis have a pancake feast in downtown Sheridan. Even at this early hour, you will find the crowd assembling for the rest of the morning activities. At 8 a.m. the Sneakers and Spurs foot race begins and ends on Main Street. The Beds along the Big Horns bed race begins promptly after the Sneakers and Spurs race and ends, again, on Main Street.

By this time the crowd engulfs both sides of Main Street from end one of the town to the other to watch the WYO Rodeo parade. It begins promptly at 10:00 a.m. and is led by the ever popular American Legion 7th Calvary Drum and Bugle Corps followed by floats reflecting the theme of the parade which this year is “Ropin’, Ridin’ &Gatherin’ Old Friends at the Sheridan WYO Rodeo.” After the parade there is an Indian Pow Wow and Dance as well as the Kiwanis Duck Race in Kendrick park.

A short afternoon nap may be in order before you head to the Fairgrounds for the l evening performance of the WYO Rodeo and then move downtown to the Street Dance held on Friday and Saturday nights.

Your Saturday, July 16th will be free, unless you attend the slack performance in the morning, until the final rodeo performance in the evening and, of course, the street dance afterward. But your spare time can be used to shop in the many interesting shops in Sheridan and to tour local historical sites.

When Sunday rolls around, you can head back to the Fairgrounds to watch the Bob King Memorial Team Roping and then drive out to the WYO Rodeo Tailgate Party and watch world a world class polo game at the Big Horn Equestrian Center.

Most events mentioned above are free, but you need tickets for the evening performances of The WYO Rodeo which has been virtually sold out the last few years and the demand for tickets is at an all time high. The last two years have set attendance records. WYO Rodeo tickets can be purchased on line at www.sheridanwyorodeo.com Sheridan offers numerous accommodations from economical to luxury. For more information on booking and the WYO Rodeo visit www.sheridanwyoming.org or contact Penny Becker at (307) 673-7120.

Each year Don King Days is considered by over a thousand spectators to be the grand finale of summer fun! This year marks the 22nd annual Don King Days at the Big Horn Equestrian Center, Sunday and Monday of Labor Day Weekend, September 5 & 6, 2010.

Events feature classic equine events like polo, steer roping, bronc riding and wild cow milking, beginning both days at 11 a.m. The Big Horn Equestrian Center’s few fences and big fields put the crowd right in the middle of all the action. Sunday features polo, the first rounds of the Wyoming Steer Roping Finals and wild cow milking. Taking place on Monday are polo, steer roping and the matched bronc riding.

The clubhouse is rockin’ and rollin’ both days and into the evenings. Each day, following the events “on the grass”, there will be live music at the clubhouse and everyone is welcome. Additional information regarding performers is to be announced.

The Don King Days events began when local ranchers came up with this unique combination of equestrian events to be held in honor of the community’s rich equestrian heritage and those involved in it. Honoring our legendary cattleman and saddle maker, Don King.

Admission is $10.00 for adults and children under 12 are free. For more information, contact Micah Olsen at molsen@sheridan.edu or 307-684-8776.

What draws young cowboys and girls to the eighteenth annual Elks Youth Rodeo in Sheridan Wyoming, at the Sheridan County Fairgrounds the weekend prior to Labor Day weekend?

Major draws to competitors from all over the region are the opportunity to win a year lease on a new Ford F250 four-wheel drive XLT quadcab diesel pickup, which is awarded to the senior all-round champion. Megan Belus of Buffalo, Wyoming was the 2009 winner of the use of the pickup. And secondly, a trailer for the youth all-around winner, which in 2009 was Quincy Segelke of Snyder, Colorado. Juniors, intermediates and seniors are all eligible to win the trailer, which is determined by the total points each contestant earns.

Third, this event is the toughest youth (17 and under) competition with the best awards ($55,600 cash/awards), in 26 events attracting 750 entries daily. The rodeo runs in three arenas simultaneously, providing an amazing show of non-stop action for spectators! Come experience the best times of the season at this show, highlighting the unbelievable talents of youth competitors, beginning at 8:00 a.m. August 28th and 29th.

Peewee events, children as young as two and a half, are pole bending, barrel racing and goat tail tying. It is important to keep the peewees interested in rodeo so as not to run out of seniors competing someday. Junior events additionally include flag race and ribbon race, with intermediate events also featuring breakaway roping, daily team roping and steer stopping. And the senior events each of the forgoing, as well as tie down calf roping.

Following the rodeo on Sunday there is an exciting timed event jackpot featuring, “monkey on a rope”, enjoyed by all, especially the spectators!

No admission is charged to spectators. For more information please explore the web site at www.Sheridanelks.org

In 1931, the small town of Sheridan, Wyoming, was so quiet you could “shoot a shotgun down Main Street and have no fear of injuring anyone.” A group of local citizens wanted to do something about the situation and decided to put on a rodeo. They set their sights high and organized a first class professional rodeo.

After 80 years in the making, the WYO Rodeo has put Sheridan on the map. Voted the oirginal ‘#1 Western Town in America’, Sheridan has flourished into a Mecca of cowboy culture – and it’s not just about the rodeo anymore. During rodeo week, July 9 – 18, travelers can expect the streets to be filled with thousands gathering to get a real taste of the Old West. Yes, people come from all over the nation to see the best cowboys and cowgirls compete in events such as bull riding, bronc riding, barrel racing, trick riding, bareback racing and the World Champion Indian Relay Races. The parade, barbecues, carnival and street dances also really brings life to one of Wyoming’s biggest celebrations.

Yeehaw” The low-down on the WYO Rodeo. . . One of the top ranked events by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) and Woman’s Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA).

The WYO Rodeo prize money won by contestants consistently makes the top tier of over 600 PRCA rodeos that pay out more than thirty million dollars each year. This year, the rodeo has added a day of events and will span across four nights, July 14 – 17.

New this year, the 80th Annual Sheridan WYO Rodeo will be one of 22 rodeos on the infamous Million Dollar Tour of the PRCA. The decision to join the tour brings with it additional opportunities for the contestants to win an even greater purse. The Million Dollar Tour participation allows PRCA contestants to count the money earned in tour rodeos toward two separate “playoff” rodeos. All money earned during the year at tour and playoff rodeos counts toward qualifying for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas in December.

Icing on top – all the fun ‘extras’. . . The week kicks off with the 4th Annual Chris LeDoux Spurs and Spikes Golf Tournament, July 9-10, at the ‘Top 100’ ranked Powder Horn Golf Club. The 2-day tournament, open to the public with a limited number of teams, includes a practice round, BBQ, auction and live entertainment Friday.

Visitors can kick off their boots… literally. Take the family out on the town for live music on the first weekend and see just how far you can kick off your boots for prizes and bragging rights.

New to 2010, Sheridan is hosting two big-name concerts. Music lovers can catch Molly Hatchet and the Marshall Tucker Band on the 9th or Rodney Atkins and Jake Owens on the 10th.

The WYO Rodeo parade has long since been at the heart of this week long extravaganza. Cowboys and Cowgirls can hit the street Friday morning, July 16, to the infamous Drum and Bugle Corp leading floats through the city center. After, families can catch an authentic Indian Pow-Wow from regional Native American tribes.

Wednesday through Saturday, visitors to Sheridan can have some good ole’ fashion fun at the WYO Rodeo Carnival. Ride the Ferris wheel, win an oversized stuffed animal, snack on a funnel cake – this hometown carnival is sure to make for a night of fun.

The last day of rodeo week would not be complete without the tailgate party and polo game. Sheridan makes a perfect venue for avid fans and first-time polo watchers alike as the historic playing field has been hosting competitions since the 1890’s.

The Sheridan WYO Rodeo has been virtually sold out the last four years and demand for tickets is at an all time high with a record setting attendance in 2009. Travelers wishing to saddle up and visit this epic Wyoming hoe-down would be wise to book early. Sheridan offers numerous accommodations from economical to luxury. For more information on booking and the WYO Rodeo visit www.sheridanwyoming.org or contact Penny Becker at (307) 673-7120.
