The iconic Bighorn Mountains are the epitome of adventure, no matter the season. But with over 250” of snowfall annually, the Bighorn Mountains are a hidden gem for winter adventurists. The mountains offer miles of groomed tracks for snowshoeing and cross country skiing, steep and deep canyons for epic sledding, and a mountain with 28 trails for downhill skiing.
Morning ☕️
Prepare for a day of adventure with a hearty breakfast at the Silver Spur. Good luck choosing between their smothered burrito, handmade and huge cinnamon rolls, or their classic biscuits and gravy – you can’t make the wrong choice. After fueling up, head downtown to Adventure Sports to check out some gear for the mountain. Before heading up the mountain, walk across the street and get your caffeine fix from Bison Union Co.
With gear in tow and sufficiently fueled, it’s time to head up the mountain. As you drive up the Bighorn Scenic Byway (US 14), be on the lookout for wildlife. Familiar sights are a moose grazing near the road, a bobcat dashing through the trees, or a herd of elk on the hillside, so have your camera ready.
Afternoon ☀️
Less than 60 miles from Sheridan, you will arrive at the Antelope Butte Mountain Recreation Area. With close to 30 downhill trails and over 8 miles of nordic trails, your day will be filled with adventure, and the views you will experience are just icing on the cake. When you need a quick reprieve, head into the newly built lodge for a bite to eat before hitting the slopes again.
Evening 🌙
A day on the mountain will earn you your appetite. If your stomach is already gnawing on your backbone and you can’t make it back to town, stop in at one of the fine mountain lodges. Arrowhead Lodge offers a delicious burger, and Bear Lodge is ready to serve you up a cold brew or satisfy your sweet tooth with a piece of pie at the Elk View Inn.
When you return to Sheridan, refreshed and reinvigorated from the wintery wilderness, you’ll find one of the local breweries eagerly awaiting to serve you a cold one in their taproom. Share your epic jumps, gnarly wipeouts, and unforgettable moments over a bite to eat from one of the many food trucks often found outside Black Tooth Brewery or Luminous Brewhouse.
