Season 3. Episode 1: Get Well. Get Wild.

There are two types of people in the world: those who stride into the new year armed with color-coded fitness planners, fresh kicks, and green smoothies—and those still negotiating with the couch, a box of leftover cookies, and the emotional aftermath of December. This episode of The Backyard is for both of those beautiful people.
We’re kicking off Season 3 with a simple, slightly dangerous question: after the holidays—after the feasts, the parties, the late nights, the one-more-cookie logic—what does it actually mean to “get well”? And can we do it without pretending we’ve suddenly become a completely different person?
The answer, it turns out, lives right here in Sheridan County.
As usual, Shawn shows up as a willing (and occasionally whining) participant, while wellness maestro Max sets the tone early: Sheridan’s wellness scene runs far deeper than most people realize. This isn’t just about treadmills, bicep curls, and protein shakes (not that there’s anything wrong with those!). Wellness here spans the mental, physical, spiritual—and yes, occasionally sweaty and uncomfortable.
We begin sensibly enough with yoga.
First stop: a gentle class. Breath work. Slow movement. The kind of yoga that feels like your nervous system receiving a long-overdue apology. We stretch, breathe, and lie still long enough to remember what calm feels like. It’s grounding, restorative, and quietly humbling—a reminder that sometimes the most radical post-holiday act is simply slowing down.
And then, naturally, we ruin that peace by signing up for hot yoga shape—also known as the most intense class the studio offers, or as it’s lovingly nicknamed, “torture yoga.”
The room is heated to 90 degrees. Weights are involved. This is yoga that went to CrossFit, made frenemies, and came back louder. The class blends yoga, Pilates, resistance training, and a HIIT-like pace that makes you question your life choices by minute three.
Instructor Susie Fisher explains that the class is designed so you’re not meant to “finish” it. If it ever feels easy, you add weight or resistance. Everyone works at their own level, but no one escapes the burn. It’s inclusive, adjustable, and absolutely ruthless.
From there, things get… hot. And then cold. Very cold.
Kula Yoga has recently opened a sauna, so Shawn steps into a Finnish sauna hovering around 180 degrees. It’s the kind of heat that slows thoughts and encourages surrender. Sweat becomes a lifestyle. Time becomes theoretical.
Next stop: Prism Health (formerly Balanced Healing Salt and Sauna), where the wellness menu expands to include infrared sauna, salt therapy, and a cold plunge—looming ominously in the corner like a dare no one asked for.
The salt therapy room is lined with dry Himalayan salt, a practice inspired by centuries-old salt mines known for respiratory benefits. Whether someone is seeking relief (after consulting a trusted medical professional, of course) or simply a moment of quiet, the space is unexpectedly calming—like sitting inside a very stylish cave.
Then there’s the cold plunge.
For the uninitiated, it’s an experience where every instinct screams “absolutely not,” while science calmly insists it’s good for you. Cold therapy—especially after heat—is said to trigger adrenaline, endorphins, and a powerful sense of aliveness. We are not doctors, but we are curious.
Just when it feels like wellness has peaked, the episode shifts gears entirely.
At historic Eaton’s Ranch, equestrian therapy enters the conversation. Unlike traditional therapy, equine therapy works with energy rather than language. Horses respond to breath, heart rate, and presence—not words. In this space, wellness isn’t about pushing harder; it’s about turning inward.
Which brings us back to the question we started with.
Is wellness about winning?
At first, Shawn thinks it is—metrics, progress, checking boxes. But by the end of the journey, it’s clear that wellness isn’t something to conquer. It’s something to practice—quietly, imperfectly, and often close to home.
Sheridan County offers no shortage of ways to begin. Whether visiting or living here, wellness isn’t hidden. It’s woven into the community.
So if a New Year’s resolution feels fragile, overdue, or already slightly broken—that’s okay. That’s where it starts. Not with perfection, but with showing up. One breath, one stretch, one brave cold plunge at a time.
Welcome to Season 3 of The Backyard. It’s about to get serious.
